Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One

Helen Marie Weir, age 81

Helen Marie Weir, a devoted Christian, was born on November 22, 1941, in Tucson, Arizona. She passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 81 on July 28, 2023, after bravely battling a lengthy illness.

Helen had a zest for life and a deep faith in God. She found joy in various hobbies, including gardening, and cooking. Her passion for baking Christmas cookies and creating beautifully adorned Christmas angels brought happiness to those around her during the festive season and is a cherished memory of the family.  With a compassionate heart and a desire to care for others, Helen pursued a career in nursing. After graduating from Arkansas High School in 1959, she attended Lillie Jolly Nursing School in Houston, Texas and graduated in 1962 with a nursing degree.  She dedicated her professional life to serving the community of Texarkana as a Registered Nurse. Helen’s legacy continued beyond her time at the bedside when she transitioned to the academic realm. She always had an academic drive and continued her education at University of Texas in Arlington, Texas graduating in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  After retiring from Texarkana College, where she shared her knowledge and experience as a nursing instructor, she found a new purpose in grant writing at the Arkansas Department of Health before eventually retiring again.

Helen’s love and warmth extended to her family and friends, and she treasured the time spent with them. She was preceded in death by her parents, James F. Martin and Eula Martin, and her brother, Chester T. Martin.

She is survived by her son, Doug Weir, of Cabot, AR, and her daughter and son-in law, Kathy and Hal Hillis, of Hooks, TX. She was a loving and proud grandmother to Shane George, Jenna and Harvey Kullenberg, and Anna Weir. Helen is also survived by her brothers, Jimmy and Cindy Martin and Delbert and Margaret Martin, and sister-in-law, Dana Martin; along with numerous relatives who held a special place in her heart.

Helen Marie will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her unwavering faith, kind-hearted spirit, and nurturing nature will continue to inspire and be remembered by those she touched.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Foundation Baptist Church, 4106 East 9th Texarkana, Arkansas 71854 on August 12, 2023, at 11:00 am.  Any flower deliveries will need to be delivered to the church location between 9-10:30 on the morning of the day of celebration.

I knew Helen primarily as a nurse educator and co-worker at Texarkana College for many years. She was a great faculty member, mentor to new faculty and a skilled clinical nurse. I will always treasure our times together. Her love for her children and grandchildren was evident to all who knew her. I am so glad she is resting in the arms of God and no longer suffering, but she will be missed by all friends and family. You are all in my prayers.

Ms. Weir was my first nursing school instructor way back in 1992. She watched me as I auscultated a blood pressure for the first time. She was as excited as I was! The world of nursing was impacted by her presence.

Dearest Kathy and Doug, my heart goes out to both of you and all the family as you grieve the loss of your beautiful, loving, skillful, kind, and much loved mother. I hold very dear all the memories of our years together on E. 31st…what wonderful times we experienced with all of you. I remember very vividly, Helen and Marty in that kitchen, making all those scrumptious dishes at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our families will always be lovingly and closely linked to those growing up years on E.31st. Helen and Marty were a strong, good, and loving part of my life, the life of my mother and daddy, my brother, and my child. Both of you will always hold a very special place in my heart; your mother and grandmother were truly made of special stock. Both of them were skillful nurses made of steel…with hearts of gold layered in loving kindness. May they rest in peace in the loving arms of God.

I am saddened to know of the home going of our dear Helen. She and her family were some of the first people Jim and I met when we came to Texarkana as newly weds in 1958. I have known and loved her sweet family through four generations. She has fought a long and difficult uphill battle and now she is at peace. She has not been at peace for a long time. Thank you, sweet Helen, for coming my way. I am made better because you did.
